Focus on communication - taken from our Summer newsletter

Our Aim:
At the Playhouse, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop a method of communication. We believe, that when children are understood by the world around them, they feel empowered and confident.

What Works for Us:
We consistently use a range of communication strategies, including visuals and Makaton, to support our children. Our aim is to ensure that all practitioners are trained in these methods, so that each child is supported by skilled adults who model and encourage communication development every day.
To meet individual learning needs, we create personalised choice boards tailored to each child’s
interests and communication targets. These tools help children express themselves and make choices more independently.

For children who are pre-verbal, we use objects of reference to support understanding and
communication. We also place great importance on being responsive adults—acknowledging and valuing every form of communication a child uses. Whether it’s gestures, vocalisations, or eye contact, we respond meaningfully. This, in turn, encourages children to feel comfortable using various modes of communication to have their needs met

We also use visuals to support emotional development. These help children recognise and name their feelings, giving them the tools they need to begin regulating their emotions.
Our “Now and Next” boards are a key part of our routine, helping children transition smoothly
between activities. This strategy significantly reduces anxiety and helps children feel secure as they move through their day.
